Fashion & Flat Whites: Jacintha Dickens
How would you describe your style?
I am a hippie soul in a corporate environment.
I love cami dresses, patterns, gems in my forehead. I might wear the same dress at work and the same one in a music festival but still I can make both looks feel different. It’s all about the accessories or layers combined and the attitude
How long have you been interested in fashion?
Since I was a little girl using ribbons to create dresses for my Sindy dolls.
Fashion comes in all aspects; how did you find your passion for the psychology behind how you dress?
I’ve always been interested in colour and fashion - choosing clothes that spoke to me above and beyond fashion. I was interested enough to find out why people shopped in the way they did and how much advertising had to do with it during my degree in psychology at University.
Since then I have become fascinated in the power of colour on our mood and subsequently our health. I fell in love with the idea of marrying the fun of the high street with healing but instead of shopping for crystals people could shop for colourful clothes to heal them. We are drawn to colour in a way that is innate, allowing ourselves this richness enhances our lives in unimaginable ways.
Did you study fashion or is it grandfather skills? How did you become interested in it? Was there a turning point in your life where you started thinking more creatively when it comes to what you wear and how it makes you feel?
I’d been working as a healer giving insights into what aspects of people’s lives they needed to address in order to heal.
Initially this was typical areas such as food, but then increasingly the messages started to come through about their emotions, their houses and the way they dressed. It was so far removed from the traditional healing practices we know but I had always known there was more to clothing than meets the eye.
I studied fashion, colour & styling intensively & put this together with my intuitive colour and styling skills to create a new way of dressing. Manifesting dressing.
Could you give us some examples of how you've helped people shape their unique style by reading their colours?
The way I work with clients provides an added extra to the traditional stylist. Once we have looked into what colours suit them and what styles work best for their lifestyle and body, we begin to look more for what they want to manifest in their life and then we use colour and clothing to create it. So alongside empowering each client I also teach them how to activate what they are looking for with colour.
I had a client who had terrible trouble starting and sticking to any task she began - she was the ultimate self proclaimed procrastinator. We added the colours orange and yellow into her wardrobe and the very next day she messaged to say. “I wore yellow and orange and I managed to attend to 3 big projects that had been hanging over me for months as well as my usual full day, it was AMAZING! I think I’m going to wear it every day!”
Another client had recently hurt their foot in an accident and it wasn’t healing properly. I guided her to a beautiful soft baby waffle blanket in pale green and she wrapped her foot in it every day before bed for a week and suddenly found she could walk again without pain.
A young client came to me with suicidal thoughts - their parent was worried about them and felt a styling session was needed - instead of starting with a styling session however I guided the individual to heal with yellow sleeved tops on their arms where they had been cutting themselves. This client needed the yellow to heal self inflicted wounds and that healing needed to happen before they would be open to styling advice.
How did it make you feel knowing they walked away with a positive experience with you? Have you felt like this vice-verca?
Colour is such a powerful tool to help ourselves, I walk away from every client experience seeing the difference not only physically in clients but also in their energy. It’s as though their whole being changes and confidence begins to exude from them as they become more themselves.
This feels so good as I know that when a person’s energy changes then they begin to attract so much more positivity into their lives.
Empowering any client to know their own colours is incredibly powerful. They can use them anywhere in their life from clothing, to homewards to even branding for their business.
Has joining Mys Tyler allowed you to find more diverse people to read? If so, have you noticed any patterns amongst our community of positive, empowering and strong women?
Joining Mys Tyler has allowed me to heal my own story of body dysmorphia. I hadn’t felt comfortable enough to wear all of the clothes my body was asking me to. My Instagram feed had been full of society’s perception of beauty and it was my first time in a community where I felt the power of people really being themselves. This in turn helped me be fully me. My Mys Tyler clients are a beautiful bunch, who are ready for my tips and manifesting colour tools in their lives which make them the perfect clients.
