Fashion & Flat Whites: Kasey Potts

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Kasey Potts, a fashion Contributor on Mys Tyler, to chat about her podcast, body confidence journey, and style. Read on to learn more about her journey.

Can you tell us about Kasey's Korner? What inspired you to start your talk show, and what inspired you to pick Kasey's Korner back up?

I actually started Kasey’s Korner back when I was just ten years old. I was working for Radio Disney, and I had the amazing opportunity to be doing commercials for them. They needed an on-air kid voice, so I became that for them after an audition. And it was probably about a year into my work with Radio Disney where they realized they needed a half hour of public service announcements filled every week, [because] that’s a requirement for all radio stations. It was at that point that the producer I was working with was like “You know what? Why don’t we just have you do the whole half hour together, and create a talk show out of it?”. I was the kid who at three years old would hear the “Entertainment Tonight” theme song and go running into the living room to watch it. I had this affinity with entertainment and with journalism and just learning how to talk to people, how to share stories, so that’s something that followed me throughout my entire career. I went to school for Broadcast Journalism at Emerson College in Boston, and after that, I started working in Marketing. My Marketing job is actually what brought me out to California.

After a career in Marketing got cut short due to Covid, I decided there was no more excuses not to pursue my dream of hosting my own talk show, so I dug Kasey’s Korner back up and decided that it was going to live on Instagram at first. So, I started doing some live feeds with my guests, and then that turned into the podcast, and that’s where Kasey’s Korner is living now. It’s just a dream that I owe to myself to pursue.

What types of topics do you cover in Kasey’s Korner?

I feel like I kind of cover the gamut when it comes to topics that I would want to talk about. I focus on issues that a Millennial mom would face, so body confidence, parenting, how to build friendships and find your community as an adult - because that’s really hard for a lot of people, is finding friends over 30! I also talk a lot about building confidence and finding what your purpose is and always finding ways to feel like you are enough, because I think a lot of moms struggle with that, where feeling just like just a mom is not where they identify. I am by no means an expert, however I love the opportunity to find the people who are and bring them to the table, and share their expertise with the audience.

Speaking of confidence, can you tell us a little about your journey to body confidence?

Being a product of the Y2K era, I feel like I was born into body image struggles. I was fed messaging, like so many of us, that was extremely low rise jeans, be as skinny as Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, and looking at these “role models” that never really looked like anything that I saw in the mirror. So, it is an ongoing struggle. I will not say that I figured out the magic formula at all to find all the sudden body confidence, but I think what I’ve figured out is a little bit more body appreciation and understanding that my body is mine. I’m the only person that can take care of it, and that I have to give it a little bit of respect and grace because it’s carrying me throughout life. And that’s where I’ve found a little bit more ownership and acceptance over what I see in the mirror.

I look at body confidence as more of a spectrum, where there are going to be days where I feel great about my body and I’m looking in the mirror and I’m like “damn, girl!” But there are days where I’m looking in the mirror and I’m like “damn, girl, get it together”. It ebbs and flows.

How would you describe your style? What kinds of pieces are you drawn to?

I am learning that post-pandemic my style has definitely evolved. I used to be very matchy-matchy, and again I had a job that I had to go to an office for, so I would dress accordingly. But now, I feel like my style has turned into what we’ll call elevated Mom-style. I can figure out an outfit around a bodysuit and a pair of jeans really well. I love a good body contour bodysuit. Because of my husband, I also have become a little bit of a sneaker-head. I’m finding ways to pair cool Air Force 1s or Nike Air Max 90s with a lot of different outfits that I never would’ve put together before. I was always ballet flats or some sort of boot before, and now, I’m so fine with just sneakers.

How did you find out about Mys Tyler?

I found it through an Instagram ad and it was more of a fashion app that I saw a lot of body diversity on. I was like “Oh, this is very interesting” and then as I dug into it more, I realized that it was really a good community builder and a way for people to find bodies and minds that felt similar to theirs. So, that’s what drew me to the Mys Tyler app.

I think that what’s so amazing about it is the complete range. For me, in my Instagram feed, I see a lot of women in the same mid-size range as me and in similar ages. But something that’s so appreciative of Mys Tyler is there’s so much age diversity, too, which is awesome. I’m 35, but the fact that I see women in their 50s and 60s on [Mys Tyler] just killing it, I’m like…this is amazing!! This is such a great resource that Boomers might not even know about yet.

Absolutely! Fashion has no age. Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Something I always hang my hat on is that I am owning the title of Millennial Mom because no one else is taking it, and I think that there’s such a negative connotation at times to the term ‘millennial,’ because there’s this correlation of vapid selfies in front of a pink wall and avocado toast that millennials got tied to. And really, we have such a powerful opportunity to be a bridge between generations. We have the parenting style of the Boomers that we were raised on, and then now we know that there’s such different ways to parent and our dynamics look a lot different. There are so many single parents, there are co-parents, there are families that are doing it without any sort of extended family around them, myself included in that. So, there’s this opportunity to take back the power as a generation, especially in the parenting scope, and break the cycle that was put onto us around family and generational mindsets.
